Is this Controversial?

The following statements will be controversial to some people, while other people will not understand how they could possibly be controversial.
I have lived on both sides of this divide, and I pray you are able to take the time to consider these thoughts and the feelings they elicit in people.

Statements

• The Great Commission - recorded in all 4 gospels and Acts - expresses God’s primary mission on the earth to save and restore humanity.
• Making disciples and teaching - foundations of the Great Commission (Mt. 28:18-20) - require significant time, consistency, and community.
• Most people in the world are afforded these things (time, consistency, and community) only by the local church.
• The local church - globally - is doing a great job at fulfilling the Great Commission by teaching and making disciples.

Understanding our Response

If the above statements are totally benign to you - even common sense - I invite you to take advantage of this opportunity to understand a resistance many genuine Christians feel toward the institution of the local church.

You should know that until a few days ago I could not have forced myself to say that last statement out loud. At gunpoint you might have had difficulty extracting it from me.
Why?

To be honest, somewhere along the line I developed bitterness and resentment towards the church. I had an anti-church narrative in my head. Maybe you do too, too.

Making Disciples + Teaching

We can bicker about it, but I think it’s relatively self-explanatory that discipleship doesn’t happen overnight. Considering that a disciple is someone who follows their rabbi everywhere and learns everything from him, we could even say it takes a lifetime. And it certainly involves more than a weekly coffee. DIscipleship requires consistently living life together for an extended period of time. Through the highs and the lows. If we look at our bibles, we see it always happens in the context of healthy Christian community.

Similarly, the teaching required of us by Jesus’ final commission can hardly fit into a short-term mission trip. He said “teaching them to obey all I have commanded you.” Even if we limited this teaching to the words of the 4 gospels, it would take a lifetime to do it justice. And in so doing we would be neglecting the rest of scripture, which we know from the epistles is also critically important!

Access to Teaching and discipleship

Consider it with me, challenge it if you want, but there is not nore has there ever been a ministry, a non-proft, or an informal gathering of believers so uniquely suited to this task as the local church. I love our missionary organizations, I love our non-profits and ministries, I love our informal gatherings. They all provide unique things that only they can provide.

The local church is uniquely positioned to do provide these things:

• consistency (it was there 10 years ago, it will be there 10 years from now)
• time (growth happens over years, not days)
• community (people can’t thrive alone)

While there are always exceptions, when we look at the big picture today and historically, most people only have access to these Great COmmission essentials through the local church.

The Local Church is Doing Well

This one is hard. I get it. Lots of churches fall short - no arguments there. Take some time to think of all the churches you have attended in your life. Make a list, and jot down the ways they helped move you forward in your faith. Where would you be without them? Did you see them making a difference in the lives of others?

This is my list. It was nothing short of revelatory for me.

• I was saved in High School at a church youth group. The youth were my only friends for several years - I maintain some of those friendships to this day.
• In college a local church gave me significant ministry opportunity and exposure preaching the gospel to other students. The pastor would regularly get lunch with me and help me process situations in my life.
• In southern Honduras there is a church that runs a school in a very impoverished area. Every day, all year, every year, young kids get an education, two meals, and a biblical foundation. For free.
• In downtown San Jose, Costa Rica, there is a small church that holds regular worship + dinner nights for the homeless and prostitutes.
• In the mountains of Costa Rica, there is a church who welcomed me with open arms and even celebrated my birthday by buying me a cake.
• In Richmond, VA I worshipped alongside a group of latinos who also embraced me totally.
• In Virginia Beach I was deeply impacted by the sermons and prayer times of a young church. They even let me speak, supported me, and encouraged my wife and I to lead a small group.
• In Ohio, we were welcomed by a church when we had no community and connected to other people to disciple them. When we unexpectedly lost our home, the pastor let us stay with his family for a while.
• At another church, my love for prayer was re-awakened during the Sunday morning prayer meetings.
• At still another, my family found a warm, loving community and were encouraged to serve in the childrens ministry and lead a small group.

Can you see the discipleship? It’s like a rich cord of yarn spanning through the whole tapestry.

To consider where my family would be without the local church makes me want to weep.

Conclusion

Please, if you feel like I did, go after this. God has more for us. God loves His church and intends to use it, but we can’t participate while we have bitterness in our hearts.

Entendendo nossa resposta

Ainda está comigo?

Se as afirmações acima são totalmente inócuas para você - até mesmo senso comum - eu o convido a aproveitar esta oportunidade para entender uma resistência que muitos cristãos genuínos sentem em relação à instituição da igreja local.

Você deve saber que até alguns dias atrás eu não poderia ter me forçado a dizer essa última declaração em voz alta. Sob a ameaça de uma arma, você poderia ter dificuldade em extrair isso de mim.
Por quê?

Para ser honesto, em algum momento ao longo do tempo eu desenvolvi amargura e ressentimento em relação à igreja. Eu tinha uma narrativa anti-igreja na minha cabeça. Talvez você também tenha, também.

Fazendo discípulos + Ensinando

Podemos discutir sobre isso, mas acho que é relativamente auto-explicativo que o discipulado não acontece da noite para o dia. Considerando que um discípulo é alguém que segue seu rabino em todos os lugares e aprende tudo com ele, poderíamos até dizer que leva uma vida inteira. E isso certamente envolve mais do que um café semanal. O discipulado requer viver consistentemente a vida juntos por um longo período de tempo. Através dos altos e baixos. Se olharmos para nossas bíblias, vemos que isso sempre acontece no contexto de uma comunidade cristã saudável.

Da mesma forma, o ensino exigido de nós pela comissão final de Jesus dificilmente cabe em uma viagem missionária de curto prazo. Ele disse: ‘ensinando-os a obedecer a todas as coisas que eu vos tenho mandado’. Mesmo se limitássemos esse ensino às palavras dos 4 evangelhos, levaria uma vida inteira para fazer justiça a eles. E, ao fazê-lo, estaríamos negligenciando o resto das Escrituras, que sabemos pelas epístolas que também é extremamente importante!

Acesso ao Ensino e Discipulado na Igreja Local

Considere isso comigo, desafie se você quiser, mas não há nem nunca houve um ministério, uma organização sem fins lucrativos, ou uma reunião informal de crentes tão singularmente adequada para esta tarefa como a igreja local.Eu amo nossas organizações missionárias, amo nossas organizações sem fins lucrativos e ministérios, amo nossas reuniões informais. Todos eles fornecem coisas únicas que só eles podem fornecer.

A igreja local está posicionada de forma única para fornecer essas coisas:

• consistência (estava lá há 10 anos, estará lá daqui a 10 anos)
• tempo (o crescimento acontece ao longo dos anos, não em dias)
• comunidade (as pessoas não podem prosperar sozinhas)

Embora sempre haja exceções, quando olhamos para o quadro geral hoje e historicamente, a maioria das pessoas só tem acesso a esses elementos essenciais da Grande Comissão através da igreja local.

A Igreja Local está Indo Bem

Este é difícil. Eu entendo. Muitas igrejas ficam aquém - não há argumentos lá. Reserve algum tempo para pensar em todas as igrejas que você frequentou em sua vida. Faça uma lista e anote as maneiras pelas quais elas ajudaram a avançar em sua fé. Onde você estaria sem elas? Você viu elas fazendo uma diferença na vida de outras pessoas?

Esta é a minha lista. Foi nada menos que revelador para mim.

• Eu fui salvo no Ensino Médio em um grupo de jovens da igreja local. Os jovens foram meus únicos amigos por vários anos - eu mantenho algumas dessas amizades até hoje.
• Na faculdade, uma igreja local me deu uma oportunidade significativa de ministério e exposição pregando o evangelho a outros estudantes. O pastor regularmente almoçava comigo e me ajudava a processar situações em minha vida.
• No sul de Honduras, há uma igreja que administra uma escola em uma área muito pobre. Todos os dias, durante todo o ano, todos os anos, as crianças recebem educação, duas refeições e uma base bíblica. De graça.
• No centro de San José, Costa Rica, há uma pequena igreja que realiza cultos regulares e noites de jantar para os sem-teto e prostitutas.
• Nas montanhas da Costa Rica, há uma igreja que me recebeu de braços abertos e até mesmo comemorou meu aniversário me comprando um bolo.
• Em Richmond, VA, eu adorava ao lado de um grupo de latinos que também me abraçaram totalmente.
• Em Virginia Beach, fui profundamente impactado pelos sermões e momentos de oração de uma igreja jovem. Eles até me deixaram falar, me apoiaram e encorajaram minha esposa e eu a liderar um pequeno grupo.
• Em Ohio, fomos recebidos por uma igreja quando não tínhamos comunidade e nos conectamos com outras pessoas para discipulá-las. Quando perdemos inesperadamente nossa casa, o pastor nos deixou ficar com sua família por um tempo.
• Em outra igreja, meu amor pela oração foi despertado novamente durante as reuniões de oração de domingo de manhã.
• Em outra, minha família encontrou uma comunidade amorosa e acolhedora e foi encorajada a servir no ministério infantil e liderar um pequeno grupo.

Você consegue ver o discipulado? É como um rico cordão de fios que se estende por toda a tapeçaria.

Considerar onde minha família estaria sem a igreja local me dá vontade de chorar.

Conclusão

Por favor, se você se sente como eu me senti, vá atrás disso. Deus tem mais para nós. Deus ama Sua igreja e pretende usá-la, mas não podemos participar enquanto tivermos amargura em nossos corações.
