Isaiah 53:2

cover for Isaiah 53:2

The One who comes with no beauty

He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
(NKJV)

Não tinha boa aparência nem formosura;
olhamos para ele,
mas não havia nenhuma beleza que nos agradasse.
(NAA)

No hay parecer en él ni hermosura;
lo vimos,
pero no tenía atractivo como para que lo deseáramos.
(RVA - 2015)

Why was Jesus this way? Why did God decide that He shouldn’t have any special beauty or elegance as a man?

To me this goes beyond just being handsome, although that is probably included. I mean, as GOD, He could have had a little special something in His appearance to draw us to Him. That was His goal, right?

I think Jesus actually hits on the same idea in John 6, when He says:

“Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.”

Where He is speaking to a large group of followers and referencing the time He fed them all miraculously.

To Jesus, it appears here that following Him is actually not what He wants, at least not completely. The reason for following Him also matters.

Some people were following Him because He gave them something they wanted, (because you ate of the loaves and were filled), not because they believed in Him personally (not because you saw the signs…).

Jesus reinforces the idea only a few sentences later when He says:

“This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”

So Jesus wants people to believe in Him personally, for who He is.

Why did God come to earth with no special beauty?

So that we, normal people, could truly see Him.
